History gives us the answer to why, why I am here, why the flag is raised, why all those years ago a general with my name lead the south against his better judgement. Why I have that name, why certain thoughts are still prevalent in my family. If you take it back past evolution to the first instance of existence you find no why, but as people we very much have a why. If not scientifically, we can see the reason, the emotional memory, that goes behind why things are the way they are.
- This is my main reason for studying history: to learn why things are the way they are.
Peking = Beijing
Forbidden City = House of Empress
Empress Dowager =
Foreign Quarter = 1. How did the trade merchants from the West view China? a large untapped resource there for the taking
2. What two things are the Boxers against? Foreigners and Foreign religion
3. Why was it not a rebellion but an uprising?
Because it wasn't against the government, it was against the foreigners
4. Not actually mentioned in the film, but what treaty gave the foreigners the foreign quarter in Peking?
5. To which side did the Empress Dowager send her Imperial troops to support?
6. Who lost the battle between the foreigners and Boxers? The boxers
7. In the end, the Empress turned against the Boxers. Why do you think she did? To repair relations between the foreigners
