It is difficult to see cause and affect in the present, because we are so close to the situation at hand, and and to learn and we are making the cause, and trying to interpret the affects of out own work. Where studying history can come into play and help, is speculating on other peoples mistakes from long ago, and what the outcomes, positive or negative, are. this is easier because they are not contemporary issues, which we have emotional ties i. if that makes sense. i think it does.
